Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
I swear by the daybreak, 1 and ten nights (of pilgrimage or the last ten days of Ramadan), 2 And the Even and the Odd, 3 and by the night when it moves on towards daybreak (reward and retribution in the next life is an absolute reality). 4 There is indeed in them (the above oaths) sufficient proofs for men of understanding (and that, they should avoid all kinds of sins and disbeliefs, etc.)! 5 Seest thou not how thy Lord dealt with the 'Ad (people),- 6 of Iram, known for their lofty columns, 7 The like of which were not created in the land? 8 and with [the tribe of] Thamud, who hollowed out rocks in the valley? 9 And (with) Firon, the lord of hosts, 10 Those who rebelled in the cities, 11 And who then spread a lot of turmoil in them. 12 So your Lord poured upon them a scourge of punishment. 13 surely thy Lord is ever on the watch. 14 As for man, when his Lord tests him by exalting him and bestowing His bounties upon him, he says: “My Lord has exalted me.” 15 And if He tests him and restricts his livelihood – thereupon he says, “My Lord has degraded me!” 16 Nay! but you do not honor the orphan, 17 nor do you urge one another to feed the needy. 18 And devour the inheritance devouring greedily, 19 And you love wealth with much love! 20 But no; when the earth is ground to powder, 21 And your Lord comes and (also) the angels in ranks, 22 And hell is made to appear on that day. On that day shall man be mindful, and what shall being mindful (then) avail him? 23 He will say, "Oh, would that I had provided beforehand for my life!" 24 None punisheth as He will punish on that day! 25 and none can bind with bonds like His! 26 Serene soul, 27 "Come back to your Lord, Well-pleased (yourself) and well-pleasing unto Him! 28 enter, then, together with My [other true] servants 29 "Yea, enter thou My Heaven! 30
