Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
By the dawn, 1 By the Nights twice five; 2 by the even and the odd, 3 And by the night when it departeth, 4 Is there in this an oath for one endowed with understanding? 5 Dost thou not consider how thy Lord dealt with (the tribe of) A'ad, 6 the people of the huge columned city of Eram 7 the like of which was never created in the land, 8 And Thamood, who hewed out the rocks of the valley? 9 And with Firaun, who used to crucify. 10 Who committed inordinacy in the cities, 11 and exceeded in corruption therein. 12 and therefore thy Sustainer let loose upon them a scourge of suffering: 13 surely thy Lord is ever on the watch. 14 As for man, whenever his Lord tries him and then is gracious and provides good things for him, he says: "My Lord has been gracious to me." 15 But when He tries him by restraining his means, he says: "My Lord despises me." 16 But no; you do not treat the orphan honourably, 17 and you do not urge one another to feed the needy, 18 And you readily devour the inheritance with greed. 19 and love the riches, loving them ardently. 20 Nay! When the earth is pounded to powder, 21 And thy Lord shall come and the angels, rank on rank. 22 And on that Day hell will be brought [within sight]; on that Day man will remember [all that he did and failed to do]: but what will that remembrance avail him? 23 He shall say: O! would that I had sent before for (this) my life! 24 But on that Day none will punish as He (Allah) will punish, 25 And His bonds will be such as none other can bind. 26 Serene soul, 27 return to your Lord well pleased with him and He will be pleased with you. 28 "Enter then among My votaries, 29 Enter then My garden." 30
