The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
۞ Nay! I swear by this city 1 and you are a lodger in this country. 2 And by the giver of birth, and whom he fathered, 3 Certainly We have created man to be in distress. 4 Does man think that no one will ever have power over him? 5 He says: “I have squandered enormous wealth.” 6 Does he think that no one has seen him? 7 Have We not made for him two eyes? 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 And shown unto him the two highways? 10 Yet he attempteth not the steep, 11 And what could make thee conceive what it is, that steep uphill road? 12 The freeing of a slave, 13 Or feeding on a day of severe hunger 14 an orphaned relative 15 or to a needy person in distress; 16 so that he becomes one of those who believe, charge each other to be patient, and charge each other to be merciful. 17 Those are the Companions of the Right. 18 As for those who disbelieve in Our revelations, they are the people of the left 19 with the Fire closed above them. 20
