The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ I CALL THIS earth to witness -- 1 this land in which thou art free to dwell 2 by the begetter, and that he begot, 3 Assuredly We have created man in trouble. 4 Deemest he that none will overpower him? 5 He says, “I destroyed vast wealth.” 6 Thinketh he that none beholdeth him? 7 Have We not made for him two eyes? 8 a tongue, and two lips, 9 And shown unto him the two highways? 10 Yet, he has not entered into Aqaba 11 And what shall make thee understand that which the steep is? 12 It is freeing the neck, 13 Or, feeding, in a day of privation, 14 An orphan, of kin, 15 Or some poor wretch in misery, 16 Then will he be of those who believe, and enjoin patience, (constancy, and self-restraint), and enjoin deeds of kindness and compassion. 17 Those are the companions of the right. 18 As for those who rejected Our Signs, they are the People of the Left Hand. 19 and the Fire will close in on them. 20
