The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ NAY! I call to witness this land 1 and thou art a lodger in this land; 2 and by parent and offspring, 3 We have certainly created man into hardship. 4 Thinks he that none can overcome him? 5 He says, "I have spent enormous wealth." 6 What, does he think none has seen him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips? 9 And did We not show him the two highroads (of good and evil)? 10 But he would not attempt the uphill road, 11 And what will make you comprehend what the uphill road is? 12 The freeing of a slave! 13 And to feed in the day of hunger. 14 to an orphaned relative 15 and downtrodden destitute person, (so that he would be of) 16 then that he become of those who believe and counsel each other to be steadfast, and counsel each other to be merciful. 17 They are those on the Right Hand (the dwellers of Paradise), 18 As for those who rejected Our Signs, they are the People of the Left Hand. 19 Fire will be an awning over them. 20
