The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ I do call to witness this City;- 1 and thou art a lodger in this land; 2 And by oath of your forefather Ibrahim, and by you – his illustrious son! 3 Certainly We have created man to be in distress. 4 Does he think that no one can overpower him? 5 He says, “I destroyed vast wealth.” 6 Does he think that no one has seen him? 7 Have We not made for him a pair of eyes? 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 and guided him on the two paths (of good and evil)? 10 But he hath not attempted the Ascent - 11 How will you comprehend what the Steep ascent is? -- 12 It is the freeing of a slave; 13 the giving of food upon the day of hunger 14 An orphan, of kin, 15 Or some poor wretch in misery, 16 Then he became of those who believed and enjoined on each other steadfastness and enjoined on each other compassion. 17 Those are the Companions of the Right Hand. 18 and [as for] those who are bent on denying the truth of Our revelations, they are the people of the left hand, 19 Fire will be an awning over them. 20
