The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ Nay, I swear by this city - 1 And you are free (from sin, to punish the enemies of Islam on the Day of the conquest) in this city (Makkah). 2 and I swear by the parent and his offspring: 3 Certainly We have created man to be in distress. 4 What, does he think none has power over him, 5 (He boasts and shows off) saying, "I have spent a great deal of money (for the cause of God)". 6 Deemest he that none beholdeth him? 7 Did We not assign unto him two eyes 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 And showed him two highways (of good and evil)? 10 But he could not scale the steep ascent. 11 Ah, what will convey unto thee what the Ascent is! - 12 (It is) the setting free of a slave, 13 or the feeding, upon a day of [one's own] hunger, 14 An orphan of near relationship 15 and downtrodden destitute person, (so that he would be of) 16 then that he become of those who believe and counsel each other to be steadfast, and counsel each other to be merciful. 17 These are the people of the right hand. 18 But those who disbelieve Our revelations, their place will be on the left hand. 19 Upon them shall be a Fire that will hem them in. 20
