The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ Nay! I swear by this city 1 and thou art a lodger in this land; 2 And [by] the father and that which was born [of him], 3 We created the human in fatigue. 4 Does he think that no one has power over him? 5 He says: “I have squandered enormous wealth.” 6 Does he think that no one sees him? 7 Did We not assign unto him two eyes 8 and a tongue, and a pair of lips, 9 And shown him the two ways (good and evil)? 10 But he would not try to ascend the steep uphill road... 11 And what shall make thee understand that which the steep is? 12 It is freeing someone's neck from slavery; 13 And to feed in the day of hunger. 14 An orphan near of kin, 15 Or of a homeless needy person! 16 And to be of those who believe and exhort one another to perseverance and exhort one another to pity. 17 These are the people of the right hand. 18 But those who deny Our revelations are the people of the left hand: 19 The Fire will vault them over. 20
