The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ No! I swear by this land, 1 And you shall be made free from obligation in this city-- 2 And (the mystic ties of) parent and child;- 3 that We have created man into a life of toil and trial. 4 Deemest he that none will overpower him? 5 (He boasts and shows off) saying, "I have spent a great deal of money (for the cause of God)". 6 Does he think that no one sees him? 7 Did We not grant him two eyes, 8 a tongue, and two lips, 9 And shown him the two highways? 10 But he hath not attempted the Ascent - 11 What could let you know what the height is! 12 It is the freeing of a slave; 13 Or, feeding, in a day of privation, 14 Of a related orphan, 15 Or the poor in distress; 16 and, then besides this, he be one of those who believed, and enjoined upon one another steadfastness and enjoined upon one another compassion. 17 Such are the Companions of the Right Hand. 18 And those who denied Our signs, are the people of the left. 19 Fire will be an awning over them. 20
