The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ I swear by this city (Makkah); 1 And you are free to live upon it, -- 2 And by the begetter and that which he begat, 3 We have certainly created man into hardship. 4 Does man think that no one will ever have power over him? 5 He boasts, "I have spent wealth abundant!" 6 Does he then think that no one sees him? 7 Have We not made for him two eyes? 8 And a tongue, and a pair of lips?- 9 And shown unto him the two highways? 10 Yet, he has not entered into Aqaba 11 Ah, what will convey unto thee what the Ascent is! - 12 (It is) Freeing a neck (slave, etc.) 13 Or giving food in a day of hunger (famine), 14 to an orphaned relative 15 Or the poor in distress; 16 And to be of those who believe, and urge upon one another to persevere, and urge upon each other to be kind. 17 Their place will be on the right hand. 18 And (as for) those who disbelieve in our communications, they are the people of the left hand. 19 On them is fire closed over. 20
