The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ I swear by this city, Makkah - 1 and thou art a lodger in this land; 2 And by the begetter and that which he begat, 3 that We have created the human being to face a great deal of hardship. 4 What, does he think none has power over him, 5 He shall say: I have wasted much wealth. 6 Thinketh he that none beholdeth him? 7 Have We not made for him a pair of eyes?- 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 And shown him the two highways? 10 But he hath not attempted the Ascent - 11 And what could make thee conceive what it is, that steep uphill road? 12 The freeing of a slave! 13 Or giving food in a day of hunger (famine), 14 to an orphaned relative 15 or to a destitute lying in dust; 16 and being, withal, of those who have attained to faith, and who enjoin upon one another patience in adversity, and enjoin upon one another compassion. 17 Those are the companions of the right. 18 And (as for) those who disbelieve in our communications, they are the people of the left hand. 19 On them will be Fire vaulted over (all round). 20
