The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ I swear by this city -- 1 – this city wherein you have been rendered violable– 2 And by oath of your forefather Ibrahim, and by you – his illustrious son! 3 That We created man in toil and trouble. 4 Deemest he that none will overpower him? 5 He saith: I have wasted riches plenteous. 6 Thinketh he that none beholdeth him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips? 9 And shown unto him the two highways? 10 Yet he attempteth not the steep, 11 Ah, what will convey unto thee what the Ascent is! - 12 (It is) the setting free of a slave, 13 or, in a day of famine, the feeding of 14 to an orphan near of kin 15 or a needy man in misery; 16 and being, withal, of those who have attained to faith, and who enjoin upon one another patience in adversity, and enjoin upon one another compassion. 17 Those are the Companions of the Right. 18 But those who disbelieve in Our verses, they are the Companions of the Left, 19 who will be engulfed in the fire. 20
