The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
By the sun and its noon-time brightness, 1 and by the moon as it follows it; 2 and by the day as it displays the sun's glory, 3 And [by] the night when it covers it 4 And the heaven and Him Who made it, 5 and by the earth and That which extended it! 6 The soul and how it was integrated 7 and imbued it with (the consciousness of) its evil and its piety: 8 He is indeed successful who causeth it to grow, 9 And miserable is he who hath buried it. 10 The Thamud denied (the truth) in their perverseness 11 When the most unfortunate of them broke forth with 12 Then the messenger of God said to them, "This is God's she-camel. Let her drink." 13 But they gave him the lie, and hamstrung the she-camel. So their Lord destroyed them for their crime and razed their city to the ground. 14 And for Him is no fear of its consequences. 15
