The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
CONSIDER the sun and its radiant brightness, 1 and by the moon when she follows him, 2 And by the day as it shows up (the sun's) brightness; 3 And the night when it draws a veil over it, 4 By the heaven and Him Who builded it, 5 And by the earth and Him Who spread it, 6 The soul and how it was integrated 7 And inspired it with the wickedness thereof and the piety thereof, 8 Indeed he succeeds who purifies his ownself (i.e. obeys and performs all that Allah ordered, by following the true Faith of Islamic Monotheism and by doing righteous good deeds). 9 And he fails that corrupts it! 10 TO [THIS] TRUTH gave the lie, in their overweening arrogance, [the tribe of] Thamud, 11 when the most wretched of them uprose, 12 Then Allah's Messenger warned them: “Hands off the she-camel and her drink!” 13 But they denied him and hamstrung her. So their Lord brought down upon them destruction for their sin and made it equal [upon all of them]. 14 And for Him is no fear of its consequences. 15
