The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
By the sun and its rising brightness 1 by the moon when it follows the sun, 2 And the day when it revealeth him, 3 and by the night as it envelopes the sun; 4 By the heaven and Him Who builded it, 5 And by oath of the earth and by oath of Him Who spread it. 6 By the soul and Him Who propertioned it, 7 and inspired it with its sin and its piety, 8 He will indeed be successful who purifies it, 9 and those who corrupt their souls will certainly be deprived (of happiness). 10 Thamud belied in their exorbitance. 11 Behold, the most wicked man among them was deputed (for impiety). 12 And the apostle of God had to tell them: "This is God's she-camel, let her drink." 13 But they gave him the lie, and hamstrung the she-camel. So their Lord destroyed them for their crime and razed their city to the ground. 14 He does not fear the consequence. 15
