The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
I swear by the night when it draws a veil, 1 By the day when it appeareth in glory, 2 And by Who created the male and female, 3 surely your striving is to diverse ends. 4 As for one who gives [to others] and fears [God], 5 And believeth in goodness; 6 observe piety, and believe in receiving rewards from God. 7 But as for one who is miserly and unheeding, 8 And disbelieveth in goodness; 9 For him We shall ease the way of adversity, 10 And his wealth will not avail him when he perishes. 11 Surely upon Us rests the guidance, 12 And indeed, to Us belongs the Hereafter and the first [life]. 13 and so I warn you of the raging fire 14 in which no one will suffer forever except the wicked ones 15 Who denied (the truth) and turned away. 16 But the God-fearing shall be kept away from it, 17 Who giveth away his substance that he may be cleansed, 18 And not [giving] for anyone who has [done him] a favor to be rewarded 19 but only out of a longing for the countenance of his Sustainer, the All-Highest: 20 and the reward (of their Lord) will certainly make them happy. 21
