The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 and by the day when it breaks in its glory, 2 And [by] He who created the male and female, 3 That your endeavour is for different ends. 4 Yet he who gives to others and has fear, 5 And believes in the best [reward], 6 observe piety, and believe in receiving rewards from God. 7 But as for he who withholds and considers himself free of need 8 and cries lies to the reward most fair, 9 We will ease him toward difficulty. 10 His riches will not save him when he perisheth. 11 Surely, in Our hands is guidance, 12 and to Us belong the hereafter and the worldly life. 13 I therefore warn you of the fire that is ablaze. 14 None shall enter it save the most wretched, 15 Who gives the lie (to the truth) and turns (his) back. 16 and from which the cautious shall be distanced. 17 And gives of his wealth that he may grow in virtue, 18 and owes no favour to anyone, which is to be repaid, 19 Except as seeking (to fulfil) the purpose of his Lord Most High. 20 He will surely be well-pleased (with him). 21
