The Night (Al-Layl)
21 verses, revealed in Mecca after The All High (Al-A'alaa) before Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the night when it enshrouds, 1 and by the day as it appears radiantly, 2 and That which created the male and the female, 3 surely your striving is to diverse ends. 4 As for he who gives and fears Allah 5 and confirms the reward most fair, 6 Surely We will ease his way unto the state of ease. 7 But as for one who is miserly and unheeding, 8 and cries lies to the reward most fair, 9 We shall pave his way to hardship, 10 And his substance will avail him not when he perisheth. 11 Indeed, [incumbent] upon Us is guidance. 12 And lo! unto Us belong the latter portion and the former. 13 Therefore I warn you of the fire that flames: 14 None shall reach it but those most unfortunate ones 15 Who belieth and turneth away. 16 and from which the most godfearing shall be removed, 17 the Godfearing who spends his wealth to purify himself; 18 not as payment for any favours that he received, 19 Other than seeking the glory of his Lord, most high, 20 and such, indeed, shall in time be well-pleased. 21
True are the words of God the Almighty.
