The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the night enshrouding 1 And by oath of the day when it shines 2 By (the mystery of) the creation of male and female;- 3 Lo! your effort is dispersed (toward divers ends). 4 As for him who giveth and is dutiful (toward Allah) 5 and believes in the truth of the ultimate good 6 We will facilitate for him the easy end. 7 But as for one who is miserly and unheeding, 8 And gives the lie to the best,- 9 We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Misery; 10 And what will his wealth benefit him when he goes down (in destruction). 11 Verily We take upon Ourselves to guide, 12 And indeed, to Us belongs the Hereafter and the first [life]. 13 Therefor have I warned you of the flaming Fire 14 [the fire] which none shall have to endure but that most hapless wretch 15 who gives the lie to the truth and turns away [from it]. 16 And away from it shall be kept the one who guards most (against evil), 17 he that spends his possessions [on others] so that he might grow in purity 18 not as payment for favours received, 19 Except as seeking (to fulfil) the purpose of his Lord Most High. 20 He verily will be content. 21
