The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
By the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 and by the day when it breaks in its glory, 2 and That which created the male and the female, 3 Verily, [O men,] you aim at most divergent ends! 4 As for him who gave out his wealth (for Allah's sake) and abstained (from disobeying Him), 5 and confirms the reward most fair, 6 We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Bliss. 7 But he who does not give and is unconcerned, 8 and denied the Truth of goodness: 9 Unto him therefore We shall Indeed make easy the path to hardship. 10 And what will his wealth avail him when he falls? 11 It is indeed for Us to show the way, 12 and, behold, Ours is [the dominion over] the life to come as well as [over] this earlier part [of your life]: 13 I therefore warn you of the fire that is ablaze. 14 None will [enter to] burn therein except the most wretched one. 15 Who belieth and turneth away. 16 One who fears God shall be kept away from it -- 17 He who spends his wealth for increase in self-purification, 18 not as payment for any favours that he received, 19 Except only the desire to seek the Countenance of his Lord, the Most High; 20 And soon will they attain (complete) satisfaction. 21
