The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 And the day resplendent 2 And Him Who hath created male and female, 3 Verily, (the ends) ye strive for are diverse. 4 As for him who giveth and is dutiful (toward Allah) 5 And accepts the best, 6 We shall surely ease him to the Easing. 7 And as for him who stinteth and is heedless, 8 and cries lies to the reward most fair, 9 We shall facilitate for him the way to Hardship, 10 His riches will not save him when he perisheth. 11 Surely, it is for Us to provide guidance -- 12 And lo! unto Us belong the latter portion and the former. 13 I have warned you then about a raging Fire: 14 none shall enter it but the most wicked, 15 who rejected the Truth, calling it falsehood and turned his back on it. 16 For, distant from it shall remain he who is truly conscious of God: 17 Who gives his wealth in order to be pure. 18 And not [giving] for anyone who has [done him] a favor to be rewarded 19 but only out of a longing for the countenance of his Sustainer, the All-Highest: 20 and before long he will be well satisfied. 21
