The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
Proclaim! (or read!) in the name of thy Lord and Cherisher, Who created- 1 created man from a clot [of blood]. 2 Proclaim! And thy Lord is Most Bountiful,- 3 Who taught (to write) with the pen 4 Teacheth man that which he knew not. 5 Nay, verily, man becomes grossly overweening 6 because he thinks that he is independent. 7 Indeed, to your Lord is the return. 8 Have you seen him who forbids 9 a servant [of God] from praying? 10 Bethinkest thou, if he is himself guided, 11 or bade to godfearing -- 12 Seest thou if he denies (Truth) and turns away? 13 Did he not know that God sees? 14 Let him beware! If he desist not, We will drag him by the forelock,- 15 his lying, sinful forelock. 16 and then let him summon [to his aid] the counsels of his own [spurious] wisdom, 17 We shall call the guards of Hell. 18 By no means! Obey not thou him. Continue to adore, and continue to draw nigh. ۩ 19
