The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Read with the name of your Lord Who created, 1 Created man from a clinging substance. 2 Read! Your Lord is the Most Generous, 3 Who taught by the pen, 4 Taught man what he knew not. 5 Yet man behaves arrogantly, 6 Because he sees himself free from want. 7 Lo! unto thy Lord is the return. 8 What do you think? Have you seen he who forbids 9 a servant of Ours from prayer? 10 Bethinkest thou, if he is himself guided, 11 and enjoins piety? 12 What thinkest thou? If he cries lies, and turns away - 13 Is he then unaware that Allah seeth? 14 Let him beware! If he does not desist, We will drag him by the forelock -- 15 a lying, sinful forelock. 16 Then, let him call his assembly, 17 We also shall call the infernal guards. 18 No indeed! Do not obey him, but prostrate yourself and come closer to God. ۩ 19
