The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
Read! In the name of your Lord, who created: 1 He created man from a clot of blood. 2 Read: And thy Lord is the Most Bounteous, 3 He Who taught (the use of) the pen,- 4 Has taught man that which he knew not. 5 Yes indeed, man is surely rebellious. 6 As he considers himself independent! 7 Verily unto thy Lord is the return. 8 What do you think? Have you seen he who forbids 9 a servant of Ours from prayer? 10 What will happen if the praying person is rightly guided 11 or if he commands others to maintain piety!? 12 Tell me if he (the disbeliever, Abu Jahl) denies (the truth, i.e. this Quran), and turns away? 13 Knoweth he not that Allah doth see? 14 And yet indeed if he does not desist We shall drag him by the forelock, 15 his lying, sinful forelock. 16 So let him summon his helpmates; 17 We shall call the guards of Hell. 18 Nay, heed him not: But bow down in adoration, and bring thyself the closer (to Allah)! ۩ 19
