The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Proclaim! (or read!) in the name of thy Lord and Cherisher, Who created- 1 Createth man from a clot. 2 Read, for your Lord is most beneficent, 3 The One Who taught to write with the pen. 4 Taught man that which he knew not. 5 Yet man behaves arrogantly, 6 Because he considers himself self-sufficient. 7 Lo! unto thy Lord is the return. 8 Did you see him who forbids 9 a worshipper from praying? 10 Do you think he is rightly guided, 11 Or enjoins Righteousness? 12 Do you see how he has denied the truth and turned away from it? 13 Does he not know that God sees? 14 Let him know that if he does not desist, We shall certainly drag him by his forelocks, 15 A lying, sinful forelock! 16 So let him now call his gang! 17 [the while] We shall summon the forces of heavenly chastisement! 18 No indeed! Do not obey him, but prostrate yourself and come closer to God. ۩ 19
