The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Read! In the Name of your Lord, Who has created (all that exists), 1 Created man from an embryo; 2 Recite thou: And thy Lord is the Most Bounteous, 3 who taught by the pen, 4 taught man what he did not know. 5 Nay! man is most surely inordinate, 6 because he thinks himself self-sufficient: 7 However, (all things) will return to your Lord. 8 Have you seen the one who prohibits 9 A servant when he prays? 10 What is your opinion – if he were upon guidance, 11 or is concerned with God-consciousness? 12 Hast thou considered whether he may [not] be giving the lie to the truth and turning his back [upon it]? 13 Knoweth he not that Allah doth see? 14 Nay, if he desist not, We shall most surely drag him down upon his forehead 15 the lying, rebellious forehead! 16 Then, let him call (for help) to his council (of comrades): 17 We shall call on the guards of Hell. 18 Nay! obey him not, and make obeisance and draw nigh (to Allah). ۩ 19
