The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Proclaim! (or read!) in the name of thy Lord and Cherisher, Who created- 1 created the human from a (blood) clot. 2 Read: And thy Lord is the Most Bounteous, 3 who has taught [man] the use of the pen 4 taught man what he did not know. 5 Nay! man is most surely inordinate, 6 As he considers himself independent! 7 Verily, to thy Lord is the return (of all). 8 HAST THOU ever considered him who tries to prevent 9 a servant when he prays -- 10 Have you seen if he is upon guidance 11 and enjoins piety? 12 Have you thought that if he denies and turns away, 13 Did he not realise that Allah is watching? 14 Let him know that if he does not desist, We shall certainly drag him by his forelocks, 15 a lying, sinful forelock. 16 So let him summon his helpmates; 17 [the while] We shall summon the forces of heavenly chastisement! 18 No indeed; do thou not obey him, and bow thyself, and draw nigh. ۩ 19
