The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
Recite thou in the name of thy Lord Who hath created 1 created Man of a blood-clot. 2 Recite thou: And thy Lord is the Most Bounteous, 3 Who taught by the pen, 4 Hath taught man that which he knew not. 5 Yet man behaves arrogantly, 6 because he thinks that he is independent. 7 Lo! unto thy Lord is the return. 8 What is your opinion – regarding him who forbids – 9 A bondman when he offers the prayer? 10 Have you thought, if he had been on guidance 11 or is concerned with God-consciousness? 12 Did you consider: what if he gives the lie (to the Truth) and turns away (from it)? 13 Is he then unaware that Allah seeth? 14 Let him beware! If he does not desist, We will drag him by the forelock -- 15 the lying, rebellious forehead! 16 Then, let him call his assembly, 17 We will call on the angels of punishment (to deal with him)! 18 Nay, heed him not: But bow down in adoration, and bring thyself the closer (to Allah)! ۩ 19
