The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
Read! In the Name of your Lord, Who has created (all that exists), 1 created Man of a blood-clot. 2 Recite: and your Lord is Most Generous, 3 who taught by the pen, 4 Taught man what he did not know. 5 Nay, but verily man is rebellious 6 because he thinks that he is independent. 7 Indeed, to your Lord is the returning. 8 Have you seen one who prevents 9 A servant when he prays? 10 Seest thou if he is on (the road of) Guidance?- 11 or orders piety? 12 Tell me if he (the disbeliever, Abu Jahl) denies (the truth, i.e. this Quran), and turns away? 13 Does he not know that Allah sees? 14 Nay! If he (Abu Jahl) ceases not, We will catch him by the forelock, 15 A forelock, lying, sinning. 16 Then, let him call upon his council (of helpers), 17 We shall call on the guards of Hell. 18 By no means! Obey not thou him. Continue to adore, and continue to draw nigh. ۩ 19
