The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Read in the name of your Lord Who created. 1 created man out of a germ-cell 2 Recite: and your Lord is Most Generous, 3 who taught by the pen, 4 taught man what he did not know! 5 Yet man behaves arrogantly, 6 that he sees himself sufficed. 7 However, (all things) will return to your Lord. 8 Bethinkest thou him who forbiddeth, 9 a worshiper when he prays. 10 What thinkest thou? If he were upon guidance 11 or bade to godfearing -- 12 Have you seen if he denies and turns away - 13 Does he not realize that God sees him? 14 No indeed; if he does not desist, We shall drag him by the forelock; 15 A lying, sinful forehead. 16 Then, let him call upon his council (of helpers), 17 We shall summon the guards of Hell. 18 Nay, Obey not thou him. But prostrate thyself, and draw near (unto Allah). ۩ 19
