The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
A requester seeks the punishment that will take place – 1 (a chastisement meant) for the unbelievers, one which none can avert; 2 (A punishment) from Allah, the Owner of the Elevated Passages. 3 To Him the angels and the Spirit mount up, in a day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore endure with a goodly patience. 5 Verily! They see it (the torment) afar off, 6 but, We see it as near! 7 The Day that the sky will be like molten brass, 8 And the mountains will be like wool, 9 And no friend will ask of a friend, 10 Though they shall be made to see one another. Fain would the guilty ransom himself from the torment of that Day by his children. 11 his companion wife, his brother, 12 His kindred who sheltered him, 13 and all the people of the earth, if that could deliver him. 14 But no! There is a raging blaze 15 Plucking out (his being) right to the skull!- 16 It shall call him who turneth back and backslideth. 17 And masseth and then hoardeth. 18 ۞ VERILY, man is born with a restless disposition. 19 [As a rule,] whenever misfortune touches him, he is filled with self-pity; 20 And refraining, when good reaches him. 21 Save worshippers. 22 Those who remain steadfast to their prayer; 23 And those in whose wealth there is a known right, 24 For the beggar and the destitute; 25 And those who believe in the Day of Judgment, 26 And those who fear the displeasure of their Lord,- 27 (from their Lord's chastisement none feels secure) 28 those who preserve their chastity 29 Are free of blame, 30 So those who desire more than this – it is they who are the transgressors. 31 And those who protect the property entrusted to them, and their agreements. 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies; 33 And those who are attentive at their worship. 34 They will be in gardens, honored. 35
