Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
By the dawn 1 And [by] ten nights 2 by the even and the odd, 3 And by the night when it departeth, 4 Is there in this an oath for one endowed with understanding? 5 Have you not heard how your Lord dealt with Aad? 6 (And) the tall giants of Iram? 7 The like of which were not created in the (other) cities; 8 And [with] Thamud, who carved out the rocks in the valley? 9 And (with) Firon, the lord of hosts, 10 Who all waxed exorbitant in the cities, 11 And made therein much mischief. 12 Then their Lord unloosed upon them the lash of chastisement. 13 Indeed, your Lord is in observation. 14 As for man, whenever his Lord tries him, and honours him, and blesses him, then he says, 'My Lord has honoured me.' 15 But when He tries him (differently), then straitens to him his means of subsistence, he says: My Lord has disgraced me. 16 No indeed; but you honour not the orphan, 17 And urge not on the feeding of AlMiskin (the poor)! 18 And you consume inheritance, devouring [it] altogether, 19 and why do you have an excessive love of riches? 20 By no means! when the earth shall be ground with grinding, grinding, 21 And comes your Lord, and angels row on row, 22 And Hell will be brought near that Day. On that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance (then) avail him? 23 He will say: 'Would that I had forwarded (good works) for my life!' 24 So on that Day, none will punish as He will punish. 25 And none can bind as He will bind. 26 O you tranquil soul, 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him], 28 "Enter then among My votaries, 29 "Yea, enter thou My Heaven! 30
