The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By oath of the night when it covers 1 and by the day when it breaks in its glory, 2 And [by] He who created the male and female, 3 your striving is indeed to different ends! 4 As for him who giveth and is dutiful (toward Allah) 5 and affirmed the Truth of goodness: 6 We shall surely ease him to the Easing. 7 But as for him who is niggardly, and thinks that he is self-sufficient, 8 And gives the lie to Al-Husna (see Verse No: 6 footnote); 9 We shall facilitate the path to affliction 10 and their wealth will be of no benefit to them when they face destruction. 11 Surely it is for Us to show the Right Way, 12 And lo! unto Us belong the latter portion and the former. 13 Therefore I have warned you of a Fire blazing fiercely (Hell); 14 whereat none but the most wretched shall be roasted, 15 Who denied (the truth) and turned away. 16 But save him who fears 17 Who gives away his wealth, purifying himself 18 And no one has done a favour to him, for which he should be compensated. 19 but only to seek the good pleasure of his Lord Most High. 20 and such, indeed, shall in time be well-pleased. 21
