The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
ONE who is minded to ask might ask about the suffering which [in the hereafter] is bound to befall 1 to those who deny the truth. No power can hinder God 2 a chastisement from Allah, the Lord of the ascending steps, 3 The angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years. 4 So be patient (O Muhammad SAW), with a good patience. 5 They think that it (the Day of Judgment) is far away. 6 But We see it (quite) near. 7 The day when the sky will become as molten copper, 8 and the mountains will become like tufts of wool, 9 and [when] no friend will ask about his friend, 10 (Though) they shall be made to see each other. The guilty one would fain redeem himself from the chastisement of that day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 his wife, his brother, 12 And his family who had stood by him, 13 And all those that are in the earth, (wishing) then (that) this might deliver him. 14 But never. It is pure white flame 15 A remover of exteriors. 16 It shall call him who turneth back and backslideth. 17 And hoarded (wealth) and withheld it. 18 ۞ Indeed, the human was created grudging and impatient. 19 Being greatly grieved when evil afflicts him 20 And refraining, when good reaches him. 21 But not so the worshippers 22 who are steadfast in prayer; 23 And those within whose wealth is a known right 24 For the needy and those dispossessed, 25 And those who hold to the truth of the Day of Judgment; 26 and go in fear of the chastisement of their Lord 27 For their Lord's displeasure is the opposite of Peace and Tranquillity;- 28 And those who guard their private parts, 29 except from their spouses and those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock], for which they incur no blame -- 30 But those who trespass beyond this are transgressors;- 31 (Those) who keep their trusts and their covenant, 32 And those who are upright in their testimonies, 33 And those who protect their prayers. 34 Those shall dwell in Gardens, honoured. 35
