We created man out of dry clay, from moulded mud, 26 and the jinn created We before of fire flaming. 27 Behold! thy Lord said to the angels: "I am about to create man, from sounding clay from mud moulded into shape; 28 And when I have proportioned him and breathed into him of My [created] soul, then fall down to him in prostration." 29 The angels bowed in homage in a body 30 Except Iblis (Satan), - he refused to be among the prostrators. 31 He said: O Iblis! what excuse have you that you are not with those who make obeisance? 32 (Iblis) said: "I am not one to prostrate myself to man, whom Thou didst create from sounding clay, from mud moulded into shape." 33 Said He: "Go forth, then, from this [angelic state]: for, behold, thou art [henceforth] accursed, 34 and there shall be a curse upon you till the Day of Recompense." 35 Said [Iblis]: "Then, O my Sustainer, grant me a respite till the Day when all shall be raised from the dead!" 36 "You are among the reprieved," (said the Lord), 37 "Till the Day of the Time appointed." 38 (Iblis) said: "O my Lord! because Thou hast put me in the wrong, I will make (wrong) fair-seeming to them on the earth, and I will put them all in the wrong,- 39 excepting those Thy servants among them that are devoted. 40 (To which God) said: "This way is right by Me. 41 "For over My servants no authority shalt thou have, except such as put themselves in the wrong and follow thee." 42 Surely, Hell is the place to which they are destined, 43 it has seven gates: and each gate has a portion of them allotted to it. 44
