Mary (Maryam)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
Kaf Ha Ya 'Ayn Sad. 1 (This is) a mention of the mercy of your Lord to His slave Zakariya (Zachariah). 2 When he called out his Lord (Allah) a call in secret, 3 He said: O my Lord! verily the bones of me have waxen feeble, and the head is glistening with hoariness, and have not yet been in my prayer to thee, my Lord, unblest. 4 But I fear my relatives after me; and my wife is barren. So grant me a successor as a favour from You 5 "Who shall inherit me, and inherit (also) the posterity of Ya'qub (Jacob) (inheritance of the religious knowledge and Prophethood, not the wealth, etc.). And make him, my Lord, one with whom You are Well-pleased!". 6 (Allah said) "O Zakariya (Zachariah)! Verily, We give you the glad tidings of a son, His name will be Yahya (John). We have given that name to none before (him)." 7 [Zachariah] exclaimed: "O my Sustainer! How can I have a son when my wife has always been barren and I have become utterly infirm through old age?" 8 (The angel) said, "This is true, but your Lord says, 'For Me it is easy; I created you when you did not exist". 9 He said: "O Lord, give me a token." "Though sound," He answered, "you will not talk to any one for three nights running." 10 Thereupon Zechariah came out from the sanctuary and directed his people by gestures to extol His glory by day and by night. 11 O Yahya! hold fast the book. And We vouchsafed unto him wisdom, while yet a child. 12 and tenderness from Us and purity, and he was cautious; 13 And dutiful to his parents, and he was not a disobedient tyrant. 14 So Peace on him the day he was born the day that he dies and the day that he will be raised up to life (again)! 15
