Mary (Maryam)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Kaf Ha Ya Ain Sad 1 (This is) a mention of the mercy of your Lord to His slave Zakariya (Zachariah). 2 When he softly prayed to his Lord. 3 Saying: My Lord! Lo! the bones of me wax feeble and my head is shining with grey hair, and I have never been unblest in prayer to Thee, my Lord. 4 now I fear my kinsmen when I am gone. [I have no hope of their continuing my mission] for my wife is barren, so grant me a successor from Yourself, 5 who shall be my inheritor and the inheritor of the House of Jacob; and make him, my Lord, well-pleasing.' 6 'O Zachariah, We give thee good tidings of a boy, whose name is John. No namesake have We given him aforetime.' 7 He said: "My Lord! How can I have a boy when my wife is barren and I have reached an extremely old age?" 8 He (the angel) said, “So it is; your Lord says, ‘This is easy for Me – in fact I created you before this, at a time when you did not exist.’” 9 He said: My Lord! Appoint for me some token. He said: Thy token is that thou, with no bodily defect, shalt not speak unto mankind three nights. 10 So he went forth to his people from his place of worship, then he made known to them that they should glorify (Allah) morning and evening. 11 We commanded John, Zachariah's son, to follow the guidance of the Lord with due steadfastness. We gave knowledge and wisdom to John during his childhood. 12 And (made him) sympathetic to men as a mercy (or a grant) from Us, and pure from sins [i.e. Yahya (John)] and he was righteous, 13 and cherishing to his parents. Never was he insolent or rebellious. 14 Peace be on him on the day of his birth, and on the day of his death, and peace will be on him on the day he is raised up to life again. 15
