Tell them the story of Abraham, 69 when he asked his father and his people: "What do you worship?" 70 They said: We worship idols, and are ever devoted unto them. 71 Said he: "Do [you really think that] they hear you when you invoke them, 72 Or do they benefit you, or do they harm?" 73 They answered: "No; but we found our forefathers doing so." 74 He said: "Do ye then see whom ye have been worshipping,- 75 "Ye and your fathers before you?- 76 "Now [as for me, I know that,] verily, these [false deities] are my enemies, [and that none is my helper] save the Sustainer of all the worlds, 77 Who hath created me, and He guideth me. 78 He Who feedeth me and giveth me to drink. 79 "And when I am ill, it is He Who cures me; 80 "And Who will cause me to die, and then will bring me to life (again); 81 and who I am eager shall forgive me my offence on the Day of Doom. 82 My Lord, give me Judgment, and join me with the righteous, 83 And grant me an honourable mention in later generations; 84 And make me one of the inheritors of the Paradise of Delight; 85 and forgive my father, for he is one of those astray. 86 "And let me not be in disgrace on the Day when (men) will be raised up;- 87 The Day whereon neither wealth nor sons will avail, 88 Except him who brings to Allah a clean heart [clean from Shirk (polytheism) and Nifaq (hypocrisy)]. 89 And Paradise will be brought close for the pious. 90 And Hell is brought near to the perverse' 91 and they will be asked: "Where now is all that you were wont to worship 92 apart from God? Do they help you or help themselves?' 93 "Then they will be thrown headlong into the (Fire),- they and those straying in Evil, 94 and the hosts of Iblis - all together. 95 "Quarrelling therein with each other, 96 "By God, we were plainly in error 97 "'When we held you as equals with the Lord of the Worlds; 98 It was nothing but the evildoers who led us astray. 99 So we have no intercessors, 100 Nor a close friend (to help us). 101 Were there for us a return, we would be of the believers. 102 Surely, in that there is a sign, yet most of them do not believe. 103 Surely thy Lord, He is the All-mighty, the All-compassionate. 104
