The tribe of Thamud rejected the Messengers. 141 Behold, their brother Salih said to them: "Will you not fear (Allah)? 142 Truly, I am a trustworthy messenger for you, 143 Have fear of God and obey me. 144 And I do not ask you for it any payment. My payment is only from the Lord of the worlds. 145 Will you be left in what is here, secure [from death], 146 in the midst of gardens and fountains, 147 The fields of corn and date-palm trees with soft and tender spathes, 148 And you carve out of the mountains, homes, with skill. 149 So fear Allah and obey me. 150 "And follow not the bidding of those who are extravagant,- 151 who corrupt in the earth, and do not reform' 152 They said: You are only of the deluded ones; 153 You are but a human like ourselves. Produce for us a sign, if you are of the truthful' 154 He said: This is a she-camel; she shall have her portion of water, and you have your portion of water on an appointed time; 155 and do not touch her with malice so that there seize you the chastisement of a dreadful day.' 156 But they hamstrung her and then regretted it. 157 The punishment therefore seized them; indeed in this is a sign; and most of them were not believers. 158 Your Lord, He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 159
