Thamud denied the messengers 141 When their brother Salih said unto them: Will ye not ward off (evil)? 142 I have been sent as a trusted messenger to you. 143 So fear Allah and obey me. 144 And I ask of you no hire therefor; MY hire is but with the Lord of the worlds. 145 "Do you think that you will be left secure [forever] in the midst of what you have here and now? 146 In these gardens and these springs, 147 farms, and palm-trees in thick groves, 148 Will you still skilfully hew houses out of the mountains? 149 So fear Allah and obey me. 150 and obey not the commandment of the prodigal 151 who corrupt in the earth, and do not reform' 152 They said: "Thou art only one of those bewitched! 153 Thou art nothing but a mortal like ourselves! Come, then, forward with a token [of thy mission] if thou art a man of truth!" 154 He said: This is a she-camel; she shall have her portion of water, and you have your portion of water on an appointed time; 155 And do not touch her with evil, lest the punishment of a grievous day should overtake you. 156 They slew the she-camel, but later became regretful 157 for the suffering [predicted by Salih,] befell them [then and there]. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 158 Verily Your Lord is Immensely Mighty, Most Compassionate. 159
