[AND] the dwellers of the wooded dales [of Madyan] gave the lie to [one of God's] message-bearers 176 Shu'ayb asked them, "Why do you not have fear of God? 177 I am for you an honest Messenger. 178 Have fear of God and obey me. 179 I ask of you no recompense for this; my reward is only with the Lord of the Universe. 180 ۞ Fill up the measure and do not diminish the goods of people, 181 weigh with an even balance 182 And do not deprive people of their due and do not commit abuse on earth, spreading corruption. 183 And fear He who created you and the former creation." 184 Said they: "Thou art but one of the bewitched, 185 And you are naught but a mortal like ourselves, and we know you to be certainly of the liars. 186 Cause, then, fragments of the sky to fall down upon us, if thou art a man of truth!" 187 He said: "My Lord is the Best Knower of what you do." 188 But they rejected him. Then the punishment of a day of overshadowing gloom seized them, and that was the Penalty of a Great Day. 189 Verily, in this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not believers. 190 Your Lord, He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 191
