The Romans (Al-Room)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
۞ Alif-Laam-Meem. (Alphabets of the Arabic language – Allah, and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) 1 Defeated have been the Byzantines 2 in the nearer part of the land; and, after their vanquishing, they shall be the victors 3 All matters of the past and future are in the hands of God. The believers will enjoy the help of God on that Day. 4 With the help of Allah, He helps whom He wills, and He is the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful. 5 The promise of God! God fails not His promise, but most men do not know it. 6 They know only the outside appearance of the life of the world (i.e. the matters of their livelihood, like irrigating or sowing or reaping, etc.), and they are heedless of the Hereafter. 7 Do they not reflect within themselves: Allah did not create the heavens and the earth and what is between them two but with truth, and (for) an appointed term? And most surely most of the people are deniers of the meeting of their Lord. 8 Have they not journeyed in the land and observed what wise hath been the end of those before them? They were stronger than they in power and they broke up the earth and they inhabited it with greater affluence than these have inhabited it, and their apostles came unto them with evidences. And Allah was not one to wrong them, but themselves they were wont to wrong. 9 Evil was the end of the harmdoers, because they belied the verses of Allah and mocked at them. 10
