Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
Ha, Meem. 1 By the Clear Book 2 We sent it (this Quran) down on a blessed night [(i.e. night of Qadr, Surah No: 97) in the month of Ramadan, the 9th month of the Islamic calendar]. Verily, We are ever warning [mankind that Our Torment will reach those who disbelieve in Our Oneness of Lordship and in Our Oneness of worship]. 3 During it are distributed all the works of wisdom. 4 an order from Us. We are ever sending. 5 As mercy from your Lord. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing. 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you (but) have a faith with certainty. 7 there is no deity save Him: It is He who gives both life and death -- He is your Lord, and the Lord of your forefathers, 8 Nay, but they [who lack inner certainty] are but dying with their doubts. 9 Wait, then, for the Day when the sky brings forth plainly visible clouds of smoke. 10 enveloping all mankind, [and causing the sinners to exclaim:] "Grievous is this suffering! 11 (People will then say): “Our Lord, remove this scourge from us; we shall believe.” 12 How could this punishment bring them to their senses when a Messenger evidently had come to them, 13 Yet they turned away from him and said: one tutored, one distraced. 14 We are removing the punishment a little, but you revert. 15 On the day when We will seize (them) with the most violent seizing; surely We will inflict retribution. 16 ۞ And indeed We tried before them Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people, when there came to them a noble Messenger [i.e. Musa (Moses)], 17 (saying:) 'Be obedient to me O worshipers of Allah. I am your honest Messenger. 18 And saying exalt not yourselves against Allah; verily I have come unto you with an authority manifest. 19 and I take refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you should stone me. 20 If you do not want to believe, leave me alone". 21 (But they were aggressive), so he [Musa (Moses)] called upon his Lord (saying): "These are indeed the people who are Mujrimun (disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, criminals, etc.)." 22 God said, "Set out with My servants by night, for you will certainly be pursued. 23 Leave the sea behind you parted; they are a host destined to be drowned." 24 How many gardens and water-springs they left behind! 25 And corn-fields and noble buildings, 26 And comfort wherein they were amused. 27 Even so; and We bequeathed them upon another people. 28 And the heaven and earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. 29
