Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Ha Mim! 1 By the Book that makes things clear; 2 Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night. Indeed, We were to warn [mankind]. 3 on that night every wise decree is specified 4 As a command from Our presence - Lo! We are ever sending - 5 as a mercy from thy Lord (surely He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing) 6 He is the Lord of heaven and earth and all that is between them, if only you would really believe, 7 There is no worship except for Him – He gives life and causes death; your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers. 8 Yet they play about in doubt. 9 So watch for the day when the sky begins to emit clear smoke, 10 covering the people; this is a painful chastisement. 11 Thereupon they will say, “O our Lord! Remove the punishment from us – we now accept faith.” 12 [But] how shall this remembrance avail them [at the Last Hour,] seeing that an apostle had previously come unto them, clearly expounding the truth, 13 then they turned away from him and said, 'A man tutored, possessed!' 14 We shall indeed remove the Penalty for a while, (but) truly ye will revert (to your ways). 15 However, We shall truly take Our revenge on the day when the great seizure takes place. 16 ۞ We did, before them, try the people of Pharaoh: there came to them a messenger most honourable, 17 [Saying], "Render to me the servants of Allah. Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger," 18 and do not exalt yourselves in defiance of Allah. I have come to you with a clear authority (as a Messenger). 19 I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me. 20 And if ye will not believe in me, then let me alone. 21 (But they were aggressive), so he [Musa (Moses)] called upon his Lord (saying): "These are indeed the people who are Mujrimun (disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, criminals, etc.)." 22 So go forth with My servants by night; surely you will be pursued: 23 And leave the sea in stillness. Indeed, they are an army to be drowned." 24 How many were the gardens, springs, 25 And crops and noble sites 26 And the comfort they enjoyed. 27 That is what We did; and We made another nation their heirs. 28 Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they allowed any respite. 29
