Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
Ha. Mim. 1 I swear by the Book that makes manifest (the truth). 2 We have sent it down in a blessed night (We are ever warning) 3 (We revealed it on the Night) wherein every matter is wisely determined 4 As a command from before Us. Verily We were to become senders: 5 (As) a Mercy from your Lord. Verily! He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower. 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them; if you people believe. 7 There is no deity except Him; He gives life and causes death. [He is] your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers. 8 But they are in doubt, amusing themselves. 9 Then watch thou for the Day that the sky will bring forth a kind of smoke (or mist) plainly visible, 10 enveloping people. That will be a grievous scourge. 11 O our Sustainer, relieve us of suffering, for, verily, we [now] believe [in Thee]!" 12 How can a warning benefit them? The Apostle who explained all things clearly had come to them, 13 Then they turned away from him and said, "[He was] taught [and is] a madman." 14 If We remove the torment a little, you revert back (to misdeeds). 15 On the day when We will seize (them) with the most violent seizing; surely We will inflict retribution. 16 ۞ Already before them We tried the people of Pharaoh, and a noble Messenger came unto them, 17 Saying: "Restore to me the slaves of Allah (i.e. the Children of Israel). Verily! I am to you a Messenger worthy of all trust, 18 And [saying], "Be not haughty with Allah. Indeed, I have come to you with clear authority. 19 And lo! I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me to death. 20 But if you do not believe me, then leave me alone." 21 Then he called upon his Lord: These are a guilty people. 22 God said, "Set out with My servants by night, for you will certainly be pursued. 23 And leave the sea behind you as calm as ever. Surely they are an army that is doomed to be drowned.” 24 How many gardens and fountains they left behind them, 25 corn-fields, gracious mansions, 26 And goodly things wherein they rejoiced; 27 Thus (it was)! And We made other people inherit them (i.e. We made the Children of Israel to inherit the kingdom of Egypt). 28 Neither did the heavens weep for them, nor the earth, nor were they granted respite. 29

How does the memorization exercise algorithm work? At the lowest level 0, all words are visible. While the highest level 9 hides all words. What about at mid-level, like 3, for example? You might think that the algorithm hides precisely 3 out of every nine words. Not quite! At level 3, each word has a 3 out of 9 chance to hide, and 6 out of 9 to be visible. In other words, it is possible, but highly unlikely, for all words at level 3 to be hidden, or, that all of them to be visible! Also, at mid-levels, and in proportion to the difficulty level, hideouts can be partially incomplete or transparent so that words may be partially visible underneath.
