Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Ha. Mim. 1 I swear by the illustrious Book. 2 (That) We sent it down one night of blessing -- so that We could warn -- 3 therein every wise bidding 4 The command that We have been sending 5 A mercy from thy Lord. Verily He! He is the Hearer, the Knower. 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them, if you would be certain. 7 There is no Allah save Him. He quickeneth and giveth death; your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. 8 Yet they play about in doubt. 9 Wait for the day (which will come before the Day of Judgment) when the sky will give out dense smoke 10 Covering the people; this is a painful torment. 11 Then they will say, "Lord, relieve us from this torment, for truly we are now believers in You." 12 How is it possible for them to accept guidance, whereas a Noble Messenger who speaks clearly has already come to them? 13 Yet they turned their backs on him and said: One taught (by others), a madman. 14 [Still,] behold, We shall postpone this suffering for a little while, although you are bound to revert [to your evil ways: but] 15 The day that We shall seize them with a grievous hold, We will indeed castigate them. 16 ۞ And before them We indeed tried the people of Firaun, and an Honourable Noble Messenger came to them. 17 Who said, “Give the bondmen of Allah into my custody; I am indeed a trustworthy Noble Messenger for you.” 18 and, 'Rise not up against God; behold, I come to you with a clear authority, 19 I have taken refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you should attack me with stones. 20 And if you do not believe me, then leave me' 21 Then he cried out to his Lord, "These are sinful people." 22 "Journey by night with My devotees," (it was said); "you will certainly be pursued. 23 And leave thou the sea divided: verily they are a host to be drowned. 24 How many were the gardens and springs they left behind, 25 And corn-fields and noble buildings, 26 and what prosperity they had rejoiced in! 27 Even so (it was), and We made it an inheritance for other folk; 28 Then neither the sky shed tears over them nor the earth. They were granted no respite. 29
