Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha Mim! 1 I swear by the Book that makes manifest (the truth). 2 Verily We have sent it down on a blessed night, verily We were to become warners. 3 therein every wise bidding 4 By a command from Us – indeed it is We Who send. 5 A mercy from thy Lord. Verily He! He is the Hearer, the Knower. 6 the Lord of the heavens and the earth and of all that is between them: if you would only have sure faith. 7 There is no deity except Him; He gives life and causes death. [He is] your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers. 8 (But the fact is, they lack certainty) and frolic about in doubt. 9 Wait, then, for the Day when the sky brings forth plainly visible clouds of smoke. 10 enveloping all mankind, [and causing the sinners to exclaim:] "Grievous is this suffering! 11 O our Sustainer, relieve us of suffering, for, verily, we [now] believe [in Thee]!" 12 How will there be for them a reminder [at that time]? And there had come to them a clear Messenger. 13 whereupon they turned their backs on him and said, "Taught [by others] is he, a madman"? 14 [Still,] behold, We shall postpone this suffering for a little while, although you are bound to revert [to your evil ways: but] 15 The day when We will seize with the greatest seizure – We will indeed take revenge. 16 ۞ And assuredly afore them We proved Fir'awn's people, and there came unto them an apostle honoured. 17 saying, 'Deliver to me God's servants; I am for you a faithful Messenger, 18 Do not set yourselves above God: I bring you clear authority. 19 And lo! I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me to death. 20 "If ye believe me not, at least keep yourselves away from me." 21 And [finally] he called to his Lord that these were a criminal people. 22 (The reply came:) "March forth with My Servants by night: for ye are sure to be pursued. 23 (Cross and) leave the sea undisturbed. The (pursuing) hosts will surely be drowned," 24 How many were the gardens and springs they left behind, 25 And the cornlands and the goodly sites 26 And comfort wherein they were amused. 27 We gave these as an inheritance to other people. 28 And the heaven and the earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. 29
