The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By oath of the beloved shining star Mohammed (peace and blessings be upon him), when he returned from the Ascent. 1 your companion has neither strayed nor is he misguided, 2 Neither does he speak of his own will. 3 This is only revelation communicated, 4 taught him by one terrible in power, 5 The Strong; then the Spectacle inclined towards him. 6 When he was on the uppermost horizon. 7 and then drew near, and came close, 8 two bows' length away, or nearer, 9 then revealed to his servant that he revealed. 10 The heart did not lie [about] what it saw. 11 What! do you then dispute with him as to what he saw? 12 Indeed, he saw him in another descent 13 Near the lote-tree of the last boundary. 14 Near it is the Garden of Abode. 15 When the lote-tree was being enveloped, by whatever around it. 16 The sight did not shift, nor did it cross the limits. 17 Indeed he saw the supreme signs of his Lord. 18 Have you then considered Al-Lat, and Al-'Uzza (two idols of the pagan Arabs). 19 And Manat, the third, the other? 20 Are yours the males and His the females? 21 That indeed is a division most unfair! 22 These are nothing but names that you and your forefathers have invented, for which Allah has sent down no authority. They are merely following their conjectures and their carnal desires although guidance has come to them from their Lord. 23 Is the human to have whatever he fancies? 24 But unto Allah belongeth the after (life), and the former. 25
