The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
I CALL TO witness the star of the pleiades when it has dipped 1 your companion has neither strayed nor is he misguided, 2 Nor does he speak out of desire. 3 It is naught save an inspiration that is inspired, 4 One of mighty powers hath taught it him. 5 by the great mighty one (Gabriel), 6 And reached the highest pinnacle. 7 Thereafter he drew nigh, then he let himself down. 8 until he was as close to him as the distance of two bows, or even less. 9 And He revealed unto His slave that which He revealed. 10 The heart was not untrue in (making him see) what he saw. 11 What, will you dispute with him about what he sees! 12 And certainly he saw him descend a second time: 13 At the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary - 14 nigh which is the Garden of the Refuge, 15 when the lote tree was covered in mystic splendour. 16 His sight did not waver nor was it unduly bold. 17 For truly did he see, of the Signs of his Lord, the Greatest! 18 Have ye thought upon Al-Lat and Al-'Uzza 19 and Manat the third, the other? 20 What, have you males, and He females! 21 That indeed is a division unfair! 22 They are not but [mere] names you have named them - you and your forefathers - for which Allah has sent down no authority. They follow not except assumption and what [their] souls desire, and there has already come to them from their Lord guidance. 23 Or is there for man whatever he wishes? 24 Rather, to Allah belongs the Hereafter and the first [life]. 25
