a multitude of the ancients, 39 And a company of the later peoples. 40 As for the people on the left hand, how miserable they will be! 41 [They will find themselves] in the midst of scorching winds, and burning despair, 42 in the shadow of a smoking blaze, 43 Neither cool nor beneficial. 44 Surely they had lived before in luxury, 45 and persisted in the Great Sin, 46 And they used to say: What! when we die and have become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised? 47 Will our ancient forefathers be resurrected too? 48 Say thou: verily the ancients and those of later generations: 49 "All will certainly be gathered together for the meeting appointed for a Day well-known. 50 "Then moreover, verily, you the erring-ones, the deniers (of Resurrection)! 51 will eat from the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 And shall fill therewith your bellies. 53 and shall drink boiling water on top of that. 54 Drinkers even as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 Such will be their entertainment on the Day of Requital! 56 WE who have created you, [O men:] why, then, do you not accept the truth? 57 Have you considered the seed you spill? 58 Did you create it, or are We the Creator? 59 We have ordained death among you and We are not to be overcome, 60 from changing your Forms and creating you (again) in (forms) that ye know not. 61 And you have indeed learnt about the first creation, so why do you not ponder? 62 Behold! that which ye sow. 63 Is it you who cultivate it, or is it We Who develop it? 64 If We willed, We could make it [dry] debris, and you would remain in wonder, 65 (Saying): "We are indeed Mughramun (i.e. ruined or lost the money without any profit, or punished by the loss of all that we spend for cultivation, etc.)! [See Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Vol. 17, Page 219] 66 Nay, but we have been deprived [of our livelihood]!" 67 Have you considered the water which you drink? 68 Did you send it down from the clouds, or did We send it? 69 If We willed We verily could make it bitter. Why then, give ye not thanks? 70 Have you considered the fire which you strike? 71 Is it you who made the tree thereof to grow, or are We the Grower? 72 We have made it a memorial (of Our handiwork), and an article of comfort and convenience for the denizens of deserts. 73 So glorify the name of your Lord, the Supreme. 74
